Trustworthiness
- Be honest in all communications and actions.
- Keep my promises even when it is inconvenient, disadvantageous or economically costly.
- Faithfully pursue, model, teach, enforce and advocate the educational, sportsmanship and character-development objectives of our department without compromise.
- Display integrity by always placing the academic, emotional, physical and moral well-being of our student-athletes and staff above desires and pressures to win and above personal interests.
Respect
- Be respectful – treat opponents, student-athletes, officials, coaches, parents and spectators with respect; don't engage in or permit taunting, boastful celebrations, fighting or other actions that demean individuals or the sport.
- Communication – be clear about our expectations, goals and policies and maintain open lines of communication.
- Use positive techniques that increase confidence and self-esteem and foster a love and appreciation for sport; refrain from physical or psychological intimidation and verbal abuse; encourage effort and improvement in the pursuit of victory and excellence.
- Be professional – respect proper coach-student/athlete and employee/employer boundaries.
Responsibility
- Teach Life skills – be accountable as you strive to enhance the physical, mental, social and moral development and well-being of yourself and others by communicating and modeling positive life skills.
- Stress the importance of education and work with staff, student-athletes, faculty and families; to help set and achieve academic goals.
- Encourage all to be good role models – assure that team members understand that participation in intercollegiate sports is a privilege not a right and that all are expected to represent the university, team and teammates with honor, on and off the field.
Fairness
- Be honorable and consistent in your relationships and decisions with students, student-athletes, alumni, staff, faculty, corporate partners, donors, parents, fans, media and the public.
- Play fair by honoring the integrity, rules and traditions of the sport.
- Be fair and communicate early the criteria for team selection, playing time decisions, travel squad, disciplinary issues and all other matters.
- Foster the development of good character by teaching, enforcing, advocating and modeling high standards of sportsmanship; show class, be gracious and dignified in victory and defeat.
Caring
- Create a caring environment by consistently demonstrating concern for all; as individuals and encourage them to look out for one another.
- Promote teamwork – teach all to think and compete as members of a team and encourage them to put team success above personal statistics and recognition.
- Put safety and health considerations first – maintain a sports environment that is physically and emotionally safe.
- Encourage healthy lifestyles and eating habits; be vigilant for signs of alcohol abuse, tobacco use, illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, unhealthy eating or dieting. Communicate with the training room to access resources.
- Seek the advice of a physician and/or an athletic trainer when determining whether an injured student-athlete is ready to play.
Citizenship
- Model responsible behavior and abide by all local, state and federal laws.Â
- Honor the letter and spirit of the rules of the NCAA, Big East and Pioneer Football League.
- Comply with the policies of the Butler University Employee Handbook (staff) or the Butler University Student Handbook and Butler Student-Athlete Handbook (student-athletes).
