Butler University and the Department of Athletics introduced the Butler Way Leadership Institute (BWLI) during the 2017-18 academic year. The Butler Way Leadership Institute is a comprehensive leadership development program designed to educate and support the standards of teamwork and leadership for Bulldog student-athletes. The Institute is named to honor the legendary components of the Butler Way:
 
We believe that these skills will assist student-athletes in their pursuit to be successful teammates and leaders while at Butler, and as they prepare to be champions in life after sport. Select student-athletes from each team and class year will have the opportunity to engage with the Butler Way Leadership Institute each year by attending workshops and learning practical leadership lessons from coaches, administrators and facilitators.

Participants in the Institute will engage with fellow student-athletes, share ideas and participate in challenging activities that focus on the values of the Butler Way in a practical manner which is relevant to where they are in their collegiate athletic career.
