Ship Weight Estimation

GHULAM KALIM AZAD

ROLL NO 11
Deadweight Calculations:

For the calculation of Deadweight and Displacement, the method specified in the RINA Transaction
1977 “Some Ship Design Methods” by Watson and Gilfillan.

Total displacement = Light ship mass + Dead weight

Light ship mass = Steel Mass + Outfit Mass + Machinery Weight

Available Deadweight = Total Mass Displacement – Lightship Mass

For the Vessel with Main Particulars:

LBP = 62.64 m
𝐵 = 14.735 m
𝑇 = 5.095 m
𝐷 = 6.85m
𝐶𝐵 = 0.717
Displacement Δ:

Δ = C𝐵 . L . B . T .  . (1 + s)
where s is taken as 0.006

= 4848.9021 t

Steel Mass:
Steel weight for actual CB1 at 0.8D is given by;

𝑊𝑆 = 𝑊𝑆7[1 + 0.5(𝐶1𝐵 − 0.7)]

where;

𝐶1 = 𝐶 + (1 − 𝐶 ). (0.8D − T)
𝐵 𝐵 𝐵
3𝑇
= 0.724357

𝑊𝑆7 = 𝐾. 𝐸1.36
K = 0.041~0.051 (for Offshore Vessels)

K is taken as 0.045

Equipment Number is given by the equation:

𝐸 = 𝐿(𝐵 + 𝑇) + 0.85. 𝐿. (𝐷 − 𝑇) + 0.85. ∑𝑙1ℎ1 + 0.75. ∑𝑙2ℎ2
= 1535.66
where, 0.85 ∑ l1h1 + 0.75 ∑ l2h2 is taken as 200

Thus,

WS7 = 1352.567217 t

WS = 1356.702 t

Machinery Weight:

𝑊𝑀 = 0.72 (MCR)0.78 (Watson & Gilfillan)

= 1094.192839 t
where MCR is taken as 12000 kW

Outfit Mass:

𝑊𝑂 = 𝐾. 𝐿. 𝐵
where K is taken as 0.3

= 367.2 t

Total Lightship Mass:

Lightship mass = Steel Mass + Outfit Mass + Machinery Weight

= 2818.094738 t

Available Deadweight:
Available Deadweight = Total Mass Displacement – Lightship Mass

= 3088.344062 t
Available Deadweight is more than Required Deadweight.
