EXPERIMENT - 1
Aim
To analyse the given salt for one anion and one cation present in it.
Material required
Boiling tubes, test tubes, test tube holder, test tube stand, delivery tube, corks, filter papers,
common laboratory reagents
PROCEDURE
S. No. Experiment Observation Inference
PHYSICAL EXAMINATION OF THE SALT
1 Noted the colour of the given White Cu2+, Fe2+, Ni2+,Co2+ , Mn2+
salt. are absent.
2 Noted the smell of the salt. Smell of ammonia. NH4+ may be present
TEST FOR ACID RADICAL
1 2mL salt solution + 1 mL No gas evolved Absence of CO32-, S2-,
dil.H2SO4 and warmed SO32-, NO2-
2 2 mL salt solution + 1 mL No gas evolved Absence of 𝐶𝑙 − ,
conc. H2SO4 . Heated 𝐵𝑟 − 𝐼 −,𝐶𝐻3 𝐶𝑂𝑂−
𝐶2 𝑂4 2− , 𝑁𝑂32−

3 2 mL salt solution + dil. HCl

White ppt formed
+ 2mL of BaCl2 solution which is insoluble in Presence of 𝑆𝑂42−
Conc. HCl and
Conc.HNO3
Confirmatory Test for Sulphate(SO42-) radical
4 2 mL salt solution + dil. HCl White ppt insoluble Presence of 𝑆𝑂42−
,2mL of (CH3COO)2Pb in CH3COOH confirmed
solution added
TEST FOR BASIC RADICAL
1 2 mL salt solution + 2 mL Colourless gas with Presence of 𝑁𝐻4+
NaOH solution. Heated. smell of ammonia
evolved.

2 Bring a glass rod dipped in White fumes are Presence of 𝑁𝐻4+

Conc.HCl near the mouth of observed. confirmed
the test tube.
3 Add Nessler’s reagent to the Brown ppt formed Presence of 𝑁𝐻4+
above solution confirmed

RESULT: The given inorganic salt contains 𝑵𝑯+ 𝟐−

𝟒 as basic radical and 𝑺𝑶𝟒 as
acid radical. So the salt is (𝑵𝑯𝟒 )2 𝑺𝑶𝟒
