Do I need Input Material Registration?

WSDA Organic Input Material Registration is a voluntary program.  WSDA Material Registration helps organic certified operations and certification agencies identify input materials that are approved for organic use, saving individual farms or businesses from needing to conduct their own reviews.

Organic farms and businesses may use any input materials that comply with the applicable sections of the USDA organic regulations. The WSDA Organic Input Material List does not represent an exhaustive list of approved materials.

What is the cost for registration?

The cost for registration is dependent on the scale of your business and the number of products you are applying for. The company fee ranges from $125 (less than $250,000 in gross annual income) up to $2,400 (over $50,000,000 in gross annual income). Additionally, there is a $350 product fee for each product included in the application. Please note, the company fee is only due with a company's first new application. It is not due for companies with currently listed or pending products. The full details of the fee schedule can be found in the new application fee form included within the application.

What is the registration process?

To apply for registration you must complete a product application for each product to be evaluated for listing on the Organic Input Material List. The product application details additional documentation that will be required, depending on the type of product.  Companies not already registered with WSDA Organic Program must also complete a new registrant application.

After you submit your application, WSDA organic program will review your product for compliance to the USDA organic regulations. If the product complies, a registration certificate will be issued and your product will be listed on the WSDA Organic Input Material List. If we are unable to determine the compliance of your product then we will work with you to identify the missing information

How long does registration take?

The timeliness of the registration process depends on the completeness of the application and the complexity of the product. WSDA organic program recommends allowing 90 to 120 days for the review process. Submitting a thorough and complete application will help to improve timeliness; incomplete applications require additional requests for information and delay the registration process.

What Materials are Allowed?

The USDA organic regulations contain specific requirements for input materials used in organic production and handling. There are different regulations that govern the allowed materials used in crop production, livestock production, and organic handling and processing.

In general, inputs used for organic crop and livestock production must be natural, and synthetic materials are prohibited.  However, there are exceptions for a limited number of materials specifically included in the rule.

Inputs used in organic handling and processing must be themselves certified organic unless the specific materials appear in the rule as allowed nonorganic ingredients and processing aids.
