Alejandro M. Sanz Guillén
Researcher at the Department of Art History of the University of Zaragoza. Currently developing my PhD about the construction of the image of Japan in Europe through the illustrated European books published during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Member of the Japan Group (Grupo Japón), interdisciplinary research group of the University of Zaragoza on Japanese studies and of the Japan and Spain Group: relationships through art (España y Japón:relaciones a través del arte), created with the aim of the study of the presence and impact of Japanese art in Spain.
In addition I dedicate myself to art critic and diffusion of contemporary culture as founder, editor and coordinator of the Cultural Magazine Kalós.

[en] Despite the isolationist measures decreed by the Japanese government during the first decades of the 17th century, some Dutch East India Company workers were allowed to visit the archipelago during the Edo period. One of the most famous was the German physician Engelbert Kaempfer, author of The History of Japan, one of the most significant and popular European descriptions of Japan published during the Early Modern Period. This title was of great importance on Western writers and was an important reference for anyone interested in the Land of the Rising Sun. But beyond that, it was also a very relevant reference for different authors of the French, English, and German Enlightenment. This paper aims to study the influence that the German doctor’s descriptions may
also have had in our country during the Enlightenment, a task that has not been tackled until now.
Abstract: François Caron and his vision of Japanese art in the early 17th century Abstract. During the first decades of the seventeenth century, when relations between Europe and Japan were in crisis, François Caron lived in the Japanese archipelago. This worker of the Dutch East India Company remained in the Land of the Rising Sun from 1619 to 1641, reaching the position of opperhoofd (chief manager) of the Dutch trading post at Hirado. During his stay in the islands, Caron had the opportunity to be in contact with Japanese culture and learn the language. His knowledge of the country was such that his superiors of the Dutch company commissioned him a report answering various questions relating to the islands. This document was published for the first time in 1646 in Amsterdam under the title Beschrijvinghe van het machtigh coninckrijk Iapan, being republished and translated on numerous occasions in the following years. Caron's work had an enormous impact and gives valuable information on Japanese society at the beginning of the Edo period, being one of the most important texts on Japan published in Europe during the Early Modern Period. In the following paper we will analyze Caron's references to Japanese artistic manifestations, studying the vision that the author reflected on them.
