Shortly after several Strathmore businesses were left dealing with the aftermath of a
string of acts of vandalism, local authority
charged the culprit with multiple counts of
mischief.
The Strathmore RCMP detachment received
eight complaints from downtown businesses
and residents over several weeks in regards
to graffiti displayed on walls, dumpsters, and
benches. Among those tagged was Rockys
Bakerys dumpster and back wall in the alley
behind main street, which now requires the
business owner to provide clean-up to the infrastructure.
My biggest problem as a business owner is
that Im a very busy person, as are most business owners, and for me to take time out of
my day its a nuisance, said Rocky Blokland, owner of the Rockys Bakery. Ive been
here 15 years and it probably happened 10
or 12 times. I keep painting my wall. I dont
know whats going to happen to this person
in court, but I hope it sets a precedent for
other people.
While Blokland felt some of the work was
quite artistic, it was the waste of his time he
took issue with. In an ironic twist, Strathmore
bylaw officers had swept the town for similar
acts two weeks prior to the incident. Since
then, from May 9 to May 28, complaints piled
up regarding graffiti at Value Drugmart, the
Strathmore Dental Centre, Coldwell Agencies,
benches on Thomas Drive and the Strathmore Skatepark.
I would assume they would have better things to do than go around doing what
theyre doing, but having said that I was a kid
at one time too, said Blokland. I just find it
all unnecessary. I dont know who the people
are, and Im not interested in being the mean
guy, but these kids have to be dealt with.
A week after Rockys Bakery noticed the
paint, H&H Huxted Enterprises was also
made aware of an increase in the number of
waste bins that were affected.
Its a pain, Huxted said. Over the years
weve never had a real issue with it, just the
odd one and we would clean it up right away.
While he wasnt able to provide a number
of how many of his bins were hit at the time,
Huxted said the situation could get costly.

Strathmore supply agreement exceeds expectations

Amid expectations of saving thousands of dollars in electricity and natural gas bills, town ad-ministration experienced an even more favourable
outcome when their supply agreements
showed skyrocketing savings.
The Town of Strathmore entered
into the agreements effective in early
2014 with the expec-tation of saving
roughly $334,000 annually. Council was
therefore delighted on May 20, when
their administration advised them of
savings greater than 50 per cent on the
natural gas commod-ity and over $30
megawatt hour savings on electricity.
The town entered into supply agreements for the purchase of electricity
and natural gas that started in the beginning of 2014 and at the time we estimated there would be savings in the
area of $334,000, said Mel Tiede, director of corporate services at the Town
of Strathmore. A 54 per cent saving on

the purchase of natural gas commodity
and a $34.90 MKh savings on electricity were realized over the prior purchase arrangements through AUMA.
The report states that the town only
spent $1.092 million on the cost of
commodities for 2014, as opposed to
the $1.531 million the year previously.
While the transmission, distribution,
and other charges on the billings remained as authorized by the regulating
authority, council noticed a re-duction
of $439,000.
This is certainly a good-news story,
said Councillor Bob Sobol. This is serious money. $439,000 dollars equals 4.5
percent on our tax rate. Its a substantial savings.
According to last years accounting
records, the town allocated most of
their money to road lighting, which
had the highest annual electrical use
of $405,000. The sanitary sewer plant
and lift stations followed behind with
$170,000, while the Family Centre required $114,000 of elec-tricity to operate.

In terms of the highest natural gas
expenditures, the town spent $64,000
on the Aquatic Centre, $35,000 on the
Family Centre, $23,000 on the sanitary
sewer plant, and $20,000 on the Civic
Centre.
Town council accepted the report as
information.

most powerful but you can receive UV radiation
from reflected rays from surfaces like sand, water,
concrete or even grass. So use your sunscreen on a
sunny day even if you are spending it in the shade.

react to it. If someone cuts us off in traffic, we can
choose to smile tolerantly and let it go or get into a

Following a closer look at the complaints, RCMP were able to track down
and arrest an 18-year-old Strathmore
male, who was charged with eight
counts of mischief.
Typically, graffiti is done by the
same small group of people, and we
dont usually see a string of similar incidences this close together, said Staff
Sgt. Steve Vince, with the Strathmore
RCMP detachment. There was a series
of mischiefs around town, specifically
graffiti artists, spray painting various
objects around town. We started getting
different complaints by different business owners and members of the public
around town.
With the rise in concern from residents, the RCMP compiled all the files
together and had the Crime Reduction
Unit investigate. Although the case was
scheduled to come before the Strathmore Provincial Court on June 2, business owners like Blokland are planning
on picking up a paint brush on the next
beautiful day.

with library award

Three years ago, Adreena Harder and
her family relocated to Standard where
the opportunity arose to tread in unchartered waters and embark upon a
compelling challenge - one she took by
storm and that awarded her the Marigold Making a Difference award.
Before taking over the Standard Municipal Library in 2012, Harders expertise remained predominantly with
managing restaurants. Since taking
over the library, her fervour and determination have turned the library into a
hub within the community, and raised
the number of programs to 113 from
36 over three years. While many libraries rely on resources and staff to offer
programming, Harder is a one-woman
show - running nearly all the programs
by herself. It was her hard work and
constant efforts that caught the eye of
the Marigold Library System who proceeded to present her with the award
for excellence and service.
Adreena is a star among stars in the
Marigold constellation, said Michelle
Toombs, CEO of the Marigold Library
System. We do it mainly to recognize
that theres a lot of excellent things
happening and I believe that programming is really a fundamental core activity in public libraries. Not only are
they important to bring people into the
library and allow them to interact, but
people expect libraries to have programs. So its a good news story all the
way around.
Marigolds Making a Difference
award is now in its fourth year and is

presented to libraries showing excellence in areas of programming, outreach, advocacy, public relations, partnerships, and innovative use of video
conferencing.
Harder was blown away by the statistics that prove an impressive feat for
the 115-patron strong library. Although
the library only offered 36 programs
annually with 366 participants in attendance in 2012, the number doubled
the following year, and reached an
astounding 113 programs offered to
1,025 community members.
This is absolutely amazing, and it
was so nice to be honoured and recognized for the efforts that I put in every day, every week, every month, said
Harder, library manager in Standard.
Basically its just myself. With the 113
programs there was probably maybe
10 programs that I facilitated that were
run by other people. I just enjoy it and
I have a lot of fun.
With a sewing machine, board games,
a Wii, blue-ray player, and a ping pong
table, the 379 people in Standard were
able to benefit from an array of programs including Movie Matinee, Sew
Cool Club, Minute 2 Win It, Wii and
Board Games Day, Story & Crafty Hour,
and the Get Sparkled Club.
The Town of Three Hills, who won
the award for the category of community benefits, was one of two recipients
awareded with a plaque and a $500
contribution on May 13.
As couldnt be more fitting, Harder
plans to allocate the winnings back
into reusable programming.
Strathmore High School Principal Gary Reagan and teacher Susan Ruzek had students
at the school shave their heads on May 28.
The staff lost their hair as a result of raising
$10,000 to send a young girl in Kenya to high
school for four years.

Following the success of a pilot project in an impoverished village in India,
the community of Rockyford is showing
a united front by raising thousands of
dollars to provide better quality of life
to a dozen families in the hometown of
one of their community members.
Father Joseph Nagothu, parish priest
of St. Ritas Church - a small church in
Rockyford - grew up in poverty-stricken Thurakapalem, where citizens live
in mud huts, are exposed to extreme
weather conditions, and battle invasions of rats and snakes. Since moving
to Canada 15 years ago, Father Joseph
has had a big influence in the community that failed to go unnoticed by its
fellow residents.
After the launch of a $25,000 pilot
project for the construction of a 600
sq. ft. home for one of the families in
his hometown in 2012, residents were
touched by the success and decided to
get involved in Phase 2 - providing 12
of the Thurakapalem families in need
with 12 sturdy, reliable, and safe homes.
We discovered that he had come
from a very different world than ours.
He grew up in a village where many
of the people lived in thatched huts,
where they were constantly surrounded by snakes and poisonous insects,
where their huts were knocked down
by monsoons and floods al-most every
year, and they were without electricity, clean water, and sanitation. And
when we saw how hard he worked in
our community we decided it was only
right that we do everything we could to
help the people from his community.
The village in India was asked to
hand-pick a dozen most vulnerable families in need of the new homes, which
would only cost $12,500 per dwelling.
At only one-third of the square footage
of the pilot project size, at 400 sq. ft.,
Locke assured the space would still be
adequate for five or six individuals.
While the project has already raised
$50,000, an additional $100,000 is required to turn the three-phase undertaking into a reality. In an effort to
accumulate the remaining funds, the
Vikas India Housing Project is hosting
a silent auction, hoping to raise enough
money for two more homes - approximately $24,000.

We have gotten up to the $50,000
level at this point in time, but would
like to have the second $50,000 before
we proceed with the first phase so we
always have something there to keep
things going, said Carol Munchrath,
coordinator for the Rockyford Partner
Group. The beauty of the project is that
all of the work is done by the villagers themselves, and so it provides work
and an opportunity to learn different
skills. This was all clarified in process
when they built the pilot home in 2012.
They found out how they could do this
the best way.
According to Munchrath, the Rockyford Partner Groups goal of raising
$12,500 was quickly surpassed in April
through the contributions of the people
of Rockyford.
Members are already scrambling to
fill 25 tables at the June fundraiser, and
already have six confirmed tables. The
Vikas India Project is sponsored by the
Calgary Diocesan Mission Council, and
Locke emphasized the cost of the event
will be covered ensuring all donations
go directly to the project.
The Vikas India Housing project is
comprised of three phases that will begin by demolishing the existing huts
and the creation of a foundation, construction of walls, roof, and infrastructure to be accompanied by electrical
work, plumbing, and sanitation, and
finally the installation of windows and
doors. The design will also take into
consideration flooding by raising the
building to assure the house remains
stable.

Poor lane-way conditions challenges project

Despite a desire for greater density
in the downtown area, town council
decided to shelve the approval for a
development permit of a proposed 12unit apartment building, as a result of
a lack of information and issues surrounding the project.
The three-lot property, located at 604
and 606 Lakeside Blvd., raised concerns with several neighbouring landowners regarding parking, poor conditions of the back lane, and the height
of the building, which stands 13.25
meters tall. While the maximum allowable height in the R3 District is 14 meters, residents felt the structure would,
nonetheless, disrupt the tenor of the
neigh-bourhood.
Although council had previously
been adamant about fostering a greater
downtown density, concerns around
the aesthetics of the project proved inevitable.
Were going to run into this situation
sooner or later, if we, in fact, want to
promote higher density in the downtown, said Werner Fischer, director
of planning and development for the
Town of Strathmore.
I would go as far as to say this may
be viewed by some people as an eyesore in the interim, but somewhere
along the line in the downtown, we
have to establish some perimeter, some
border, some boundary, and some limits. I think this would be instrumental
in doing that. There will be an abrupt
transition, but I fail to understand how
we can ever get around that. If not here,
then where?
Administration initially brought the
issue to council as the new Land Use
Bylaw requires the development officer
to state any variances that exceed 25
per cent, as is the case for some areas
of the proposed development.
Although the apartment building is
situated in the suitable R3 high den-
sity residential district, meets the necessary height requirements, will be

located on a collector road, complies
with the Land Use Bylaw on parking
requirements, and is approved by the
Downtown Design Review Committee, council showed concern with the
requested relaxations, proper notification to neigh-bouring residences, and
the deteriorating condition of the back
lane.
That is a huge concern for me, from
a town perspective, because that lane is
a mess, said Councillor Denise Peterson. Its a lane-way that is used a great
deal because of the way busing happens in front of Sacred Heart and Holy
Cross Collegiate. So its a very busy
lane and not in good shape. I think its
hugely problematic to go ahead with
this without knowing whats going to
happen to that lane.
Councillor Petersons concerns were
echoed by Councillor Bob Sobol, who
remarked the lane-way was his only
concern in going forward with the project.
A letter from a concerned resident
whose property is located near the
three lots, also outlines the issues concerning the back lane. Referring to the
lane as in poor shape from heavy traffic, he ex-pects a proper upgrade would
be required, repair to the leak causing
the sink hole, as well as paving.
As the letter continues to argue that
road parking for all residents in the
area could be affected, Pat Rempel
stated that realistically the area would
see an increase of 16 to 18 vehicles. Yet
ad-ministration assured council that the
applicant exceeded the required parking stalls with a proposed 13 stalls,
when only 12 are required under the
Land Use Bylaw.

with a number of issues, yet supported
the approval of the development permit
application with conditions, if council
approved relaxations and variances of
the Land Use Bylaw. The relaxations

people not liking the building that
close. Theres some discomfort there.
In our opinion as staff, granting the relaxations will not unduly interfere with
the amenities of the neighbourhood or
materially interfere with or affect the
use, enjoyment, or value of neighbouring parcels of land.
As only two resident responses in
the form of letters were presented to
the town, Mayor Michael Ell questioned
whether enough time had been provided for residents to respond to the
mat-ter.
As a result, council unanimously
agreed on May 20, to postpone the issue allowing for council to consider the
situation in more detail and provide administration with time to propose possible solutions to the lane-way.

Wildrose MLA for Strathmore-Brooks

On May 5, Albertans elected a new government
and an even stronger official opposition. Both the
NDP and the Wildrose have important jobs as we
move forward over the next four years.
While the new government has been off to a
bumpy start, they will likely get a better handle
on things as they settle in. The Wildrose Opposition understands this and will work with the NDP
through its learning curve; nevertheless we will
hold them to account.
For example, the NDP already tried to turn its
taxpayer-funded swearing-in ceremony into a
partisan fundraiser. We called the new premier
out on this, and while they claimed innocence at
first, they did eventually apologize to Albertans
and backtrack on trying to raise money out of the
event. Good on the new premier for accepting responsibility and admitting to an error.
This is the way government and opposition are
supposed to work; when the government makes
a mistake, the opposition calls them out and pressures them to correct course.
This is not to say that the NDP will always
change course, even when doing so would be
wise. The Wildrose and NDP have starkly different
outlooks on public policy, particularly fiscal and
energy policy.
The NDP has already announced that it will
not introduce its own budget this spring but will
instead seek to pass an interim supply bill and
bring forward its full budget in the fall.
In my new role as the Wildrose Shadow Minister
of Finance, it is my job to lead the scrutiny of the
governments spending plan. If the NDP ask the
Legislature for temporary authorization for $10$15 billion dollars to fund the government until
they can pass their own budget, I will work with
them. However, I will fight for a proper accounting of how this money is being spent and not
hand them a blank cheque.
The NDP platform was not given the same scrutiny as the Wildrose and other platforms during
the election campaign. It contains many spending
promises that just dont add up. It promises to

accelerate the PC platforms plan to raise taxes,

increase spending and take on more debt.
Either the NDP will have to backtrack on some
of their spending promises or raise taxes and the
debt by even more than they promised to. Unless
oil prices make a comeback, there are bound to be
some broken promises.
Some of those promises like a Quebec-style
government daycare bureaucracy sound nice on
paper. However, they have the potential to bankrupt the province, which already spends far more
than most other provinces in Canada. Raising taxes
during an economic downturn along with other
retrograde policies, have the very real potential to
make the economic situation much worse.
This is where the Wildrose Opposition must
represent the views of the 21 constituencies in
which we were elected as MLAs and bring forward
common-sense alternative policies for debate in
the Legislature.

One dead in motor vehicle collision

Township Road 244 was blocked off for a period of time on May 31, allowing for officials to
con-duct an investigation and remove debris, after
a two-vehicle collision ended in a fatality.
Dale Adam Beaton, the 34-year-old driver of
a motorcycle, was pronounced deceased at the
scene after he collided with an oncoming vehicle
that was moving across his lane to make a lefthand turn into a parking lot on Township Road
244 at 10 a.m.
The vehicle was making a left turn into oncoming traffic and a cyclist hit the side of the vehicle
causing him to lose control, said Staff Sgt. Steve
Vince with the Strathmore detachment. The driver of the vehicle assisted the motorcyclist and provided immediate first-aid, unfortunately he was
pronounced dead at the scene.
Strathmore RCMP, and emergency services responded to the call and continue to investigate
the circumstances. According to officials, providing answers may require some time, through the
analysis of the cars computer, the bikes information, and skid mark measurements.
Alcohol and road conditions are not believed to
have played factors in the collision, but RCMP are
considering speed. The driver of the vehicle was
not injured.
Strathmore Victim Services is providing assistance to the family and friends.

Food truck dispute heading

towards positive outcome

Despite apprehension about the Calgary food
trucks taking away business from the Lions club
food stalls during the Strathmore Stampede and
Heritage Days, talks between the Strathmore Agricultural Society and the Strathmore Lions club
have been positive.
The Ag Society announced that during the Stampede and Heritage Days the Calgary food trucks
would help to feed patrons, in hopes that food
trucks will help draw an even larger crowd to the
event.
Herb McLane, the Ag Society president, said the
food trucks would benefit the park and the Lions
club as it revolves around the theme of food, food
choice, and beverage, which is an Agricultural
theme.
Calgary food trucks have a clientele that follows them, their choices are varied and none of
them fit the profile of Lions, said McLane.
We are in the view that the Lions will benefit
from the increased patronage on the grounds during the event and given their immediate location
will have the benefit of the immediate clientele
that spills out of the grandstand and the beer gardens. With these factors were optimistic that the
Lions will do even better.
Despite such reassurance, there are some Lions
club members who feel that the trucks will take

away their profits and those of the community. A
meeting was held to discuss the situation.
Unfortunately their way of going about it does
impact some of our sales, but on the other hand
we feel like we can complete with the food trucks
in terms of quality and cost, said Greg Helfrich,
president of the Strathmore Lions Club. So the
meeting, I think, it was quite positive.
He added they will continue to work together
because it is in the best interest of both organizations to make the food trucks work.
While having the food trucks at the event is already a solid decision, the meeting was held to
try to keep both organizations happy. One of the
things discussed was the Ag Society wanting the
food trucks all in one area while the Lions club
suggested they be spread out.
The meeting hosted a diverse group of opinions. Some were happy to have the competition,
some were happy to have a variety of food, and
some completely disagreed with having the food
trucks at the event. However, Helfrich said there
was a certain willingness to explore different options as well as working together to improve the
attendance.
This doesnt need to be a fight and I dont think
it is turning into one, says Helfrich.
It is just a difference of opinion. Those that disagreed did so agreeably.

A strange week
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Im starting to wonder if our 15 year old dog is
starting to show signs of dementia. I dont even
know if dogs get this condition, but hes got me
wondering. Heres a typical night. He scratches at
the door to go out, then after a set amount of time,
scratches to get back in. I havent figured out if his
bladders tiny, his prostate is huge, or if hes forgotten he just went out!
So, I get up again, and let him outside. This sometimes happens a third time! I cant get mad at him,
because I think he truly has forgotten he just went
out! Hes always so happy I let him back in. His
brown and white feather duster tail always wags
vigorously, as he hops back over the door jam. Sadly, his back legs often give out and he sprawls on
the tile floor! Oh well, hes been a great dog, and
hes in his twilight years I dont mind a little
inconvenience.
What is funny is that hes become devoted to Deb.
He goes to her office regularly, and even has started
to try and herd her to bed. When he sees her get
up, he walks with her, then ahead to our bedroom
door, and waits, looking back at her. Then, hell
walk back to her and try to get her to go with him to
bed! He wants to set the bedtime hour for us now!
My much-anticipated return to SloPitch has come
to a limping end. In my last game, I managed to roll
my left ankle. I was sprinting (okay, a fast lumber!)
to first, when my left ankle gave as it hit the base!
Sadly, I didnt even beat out the throw, and was
left to limp back to our dugout. Then, in our very
next play in the field, our shortstop drilled a throw
to me at first. The kid has a rifle for an arm, but this
time his bullet skipped ever so gracefully off the
ground, past my mitt, and into my shin. Im black
and blue from shin to the bottom of my foot even
my arch is bruised. Did I tell you that Im too old

to be doing this? That guy who yelled I was 74 the
week before, wasnt too far off! Then to cap off that
bit of bad luck, I stepped in a gopher hole at our
school the very next day, rolling the same ankle! Im
now an official sponsor for Advil, Tylenol, and any
other pain reliever!
Saturday came along, and the Fules were invited
to a bonfire. Those of you who know us, know that
we try to be on time, but we dont often succeed!
Debbie had baked all afternoon, planning to take
her famous chocolate chip cookies. We were once
again running behind, so we really hurried. When
we arrived, the first thing Deb said was, where are
all the cars?
I as usual, had no answer, so we walked to the
back yard. The yard was dark, no one was there,
and the sprinkler was running. It was dead quiet.
We went to the front door, thinking maybe they
were all inside to start. The house was dark, and
still dead quiet.
Just before I rang the bell, I checked the text
message invite. We werent an hour late, we were a
week early! Then Deb began to yell quietly (like the
IKEA commercial), start the car, start the car!
Deb, Breanne, and I ran like ninjas across the
street. I actually had to do a kind of hobble slash
shuffle, and we leaped into the SUV! I wonder what
the neighbours thought? It probably looked like a
botched home invasion! The whole time running,
Breanne was quietly mocking us saying, you guys
are such losers, and Im one too, for joining you
tonight!

Pilot and Cadet reunite years after serious accident

graduation/celebration, eight years after Curtis saved
Hermansons life.

Eight years ago, Greg Hermanson broke the rules, and
it nearly cost him his life.
Defying his mothers edict of only one child operating
the tractor at a time, Hermanson hung on to the side
of the John Deere machinery as his sister took to the
wheel.
Shortly after, tragedy hit. A bump in the road forced
then 10-year-old Hermanson on the ground, his body
enduring the weight of the tractor as one of its wheels
crushed his left side. With multiple broken ribs, a shifted
heart, and a collapsed lung, his mother Alanna and older

the STARS helicopter near their farm in Standard.
Then, last Saturday, almost to the day the helicopter was
dispatched to save his life, Hermanson and the senior pilot
were reunited when Curtis served as the reviewing officer
for the 903 Royal Canadian Air Cadets a program Hermanson aged out from over the weekend.
It just so happened I was lucky to be the pilot that moved
Greg, because Im lucky to be here and I quite enjoyed it,
said Captain Greg Curtis, senior pilot STARS Air Ambulance.
These kind of organizations have a tendency for young
people to be so influenced in terms of their determination
and their direction over a period of time, as opposed to just
a moment. So you admire that kind of thinking from young
people. And I think it speaks volumes to this young man
and all these young people.
For Curtis, who has been flying for the air ambulance
service for 30 years, the opportunity to reunite with one
of the patients transported in his helicopter are few and
far between. Perhaps rarer is the chance to see that patient
pursue aviation and be asked to partake in the Air Cadets
graduation ceremony.
Yet, Captain Barry Duffield knows Curtiss presence also
served for inspiration among many of the other young cadets in the squardron.
I think its important to have members of the community
that the cadets want to emulate, said Duffield, Commanding officer 903 Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He flies helicopters and hes one of the senior captains within STARS. So
not only is it great to have him as a mentor to the kids, he
also assisted one of the kids before he even became a cadet.
I think its fantastic. Everything has come full circle.
Hermanson joined the Cadets after his accident, when his
injuries prevented him from continuing to play hockey. Having always been intrigued with aviation, Alanna Hermanson
caught her son reading a basic training manual, From the
Ground Up, and enrolled him soon after. Once he was part
of the squadron, his young age proved him ineligible for the
Power Pilot and Gliding Pilot. However, that didnt stop the
young cadet, who participated in the program three years
in a row for pure knowledge, before he was eligible to take
the exam. According to Duffield, Hermansons score was
one of the top three he had seen within the squadron over
11 years.
Flying has always been one of those things that Ive been
wanting to do, Hermanson said. Its one of those childhood
dreams that you have when youre young and you never get
around to doing. So I wanted to do that but I knew it was
expensive and I didnt know if I ever could. [Mom] suggested this program and Ive been here ever since.
Since becoming a cadet, the deputy squadron commander
hadnt missed a single meeting until three weeks ago, enrolled in the aviation program at Mount Royal, and joined
the Hussar Firefighting department. Hermanson was one
of two cadets to age out of the program on May 30. The
ceremony, which was held at the Strathmore High School,
acknowledged all cadets from the 903 Royal Canadian Air
Cadets graduating from their levels. With Hermanson aging out of the program, Duffield said the squadron will be
required to fill a void.
He is one of the three to four pillars in the squadron and
when you take that away someone needs to replace that,
Duffield said. People should look to wanting to be him
a good pillar thats going to be missing from the squadron.

With the expansion of the Summer
Reading Program, the Strathmore Municipal Library is anticipating an influx
of participants, increasing the need for
volunteer involvement and providing
room for some newfangled ideas.
Returning program coordinators,
Krystal Esau and Rynnelle Wiebe, expect numbers to increase with additional programs ranging from preschool to
Grade 7. The program attracted 130
kids last year, and could potentially
rise to 155 this summer. Although the
program wont start back up until July,
the library is already searching for volunteers.
Its just cool to see kids grow up
and weve seen some definite growth,
and there are a couple kids who were
in our teen program who now are volunteers so thats really cool to see them
step out and take some responsibility,
said Esau, who recalls nine volunteers
taking part in the program last year.
I think what makes this program so
special is that it has a lot of different
aspect to it. Its not just for kids who
already like to read, but also for kids
who just need something to do in the
summer. We try to encourage creativity, and we try to encourage making
new friends.
While the program incorporates
games, crafts, prizes, and lots of reading, the coordinators are already thinking of creative ways to entertain their
groups. Unprecedented in Strathmore,
the staff is planning to offer a challenge
that will have the different groups compete against each other to see who can
read the most. Esau and Wiebe are
planning on monitoring the groups efforts by tracking their reading achievements around the meeting room wall
until they reach a pinned-up treehouse.
Were hoping to emphasize that
books arent just for school, theyre
also a form of play, said Wiebe, Summer Reading Program coordinator. We
get a theme because we are working
under the TD Summer Reading Club

for libraries, and the theme this year is
play.
Having previously explored themes
including Eureka and Go, the library is
thrilled with the announcement while
drawing attention to the many books
associated with the theme. However,
despite serving as entertainment for
families during the summer, the library
recognized the programs many benefits. Over the years, the staff has seen
many kids improve their reading levels
over the summer and as a result grow
in their comprehension skills and confidence.
There are many studies that show
that as kids continue to read throughout summer, theyll actually do better
in the following school year, said Carmen Erison, assistant director to Library
Services at the Strathmore Municipal
Library. For us to be able to provide
a type of program like this for the community is quite beneficial to families if
they want to continue on with that education throughout summer.
For kids who are heading on vacation during the summer, tracking their
reading online allows them to continue
to participate in the program and score
some great prizes. Esau and Wiebe are
also looking into offering events on
certain Fridays for children in the community regardless of whether they are
part of the program. With a minimal
fee of $5 for the summer, or $6.50 if
paying by credit card, Erison said the
library didnt want children left out due
to cost. She added that any low income
families can meet with the staff to have
their fee waived.
Whereas the TD Summer Reading
Club is Canada-wide, the Marigold Library System also offers an online reading program for teenagers. The Summer Reading Program is offered for
kids aged three to 13 and runs from
July 6 - Aug. 21. Registration to the program opens on June 13 at 10 a.m. For

The name Hartell originates in Wales, and Bobs

grandfather F.J.Hartell immigrated initially to Ontario, before moving on to homestead
at Fort QuAppelle, Sask. in
1885.
After marrying Carry, they
moved to Alberta. In 1916,
he purchased three different
quarter sections, and Bob and
Yvonne now live on one of
them.
Bob was born in Calgary in
1948, to Jack and Mag Hartell
who farmed four miles west of
Strathmore, where the house
was located at Hartells Coulee. He attended the original
Samuel Crowther School, then
went to Olds Agricultural College.
Yvonnes great-grandfather
on her fathers side originated
in Belgium. They were supposed to come to Canada on
the Titanic in 1912, but missed
the boat!
Yvonnes mothers side of
the family moved from Iowa
to the Gleichen area, where
they started farming. Yvonne
was born in 1948 in Calgary,
to Albert and Florice Desmet,
and after attending school in
Namaka, attended Samuel
Crowther, before attending
Mount Royal College (now
University) where she graduated as a registered nurse.
Both sets of parents were
very involved in the development of Strathmore and surrounding area.
Bob and Yvonne had first
met while in Grade 3 at Sam-
uel Crowther, and they were

married in 1969. They have
two daughters and a son, who
have provided them with seven grandchildren.
Their main occupation in
life has been farming and
ranching, grain and beef.
In the 1980s and early
1990s, Bob was the manager of Hoggys Bar and Grill,
while Yvonne became an office worker with Strathmore
RCMP, a position she enjoyed
for the next 28 years. At the
same time, she was co-owner
of The Fit Stop in Strathmore,
and worked with the Calgary
Exhibition and Stampede taking horse racing bets! Bob
also spent 18 years working
as a Brand Inspector for livestock investigation.
In 1975, Bob was awarded
All Round Cowboy for Canada.
He advises that income from
farming was very poor in the
late 60s, and he had to turn to
rodeo activities to supplement
his income.
Bob has worked in many
movies like Unforgiven, Little
Big Man, The Shootist, and
Buffalo Bill and the Indians.
One year he participated in
flying his plane over California when a group of cowboys from Southern Alberta
were lost and presumed to
have crashed in the California
mountains.
Both Bob and Yvonne are
retired, and enjoy camping,
fishing and hunting. Most of
their spare time is spent visiting and following family
members in their sports and
activities, which includes rodeo.

Boston Pizza is no stranger to giving
back to the community, and for the first
time, this year, the Strathmore Boston
Pizza is taking it one step further with
their involvement in the Boston Pizza
Foundation Future Prospects.
For 25 years, the Boston Pizza Foundation has contributed over $20 million to charities focused on children in
Canada and around the world. Future
Prospects, which was created by the
foundation in 2014, shares the same
goal. These charities provide children
with mentorship, guidance and reaching their full potential.
This is what Boston Pizzas are famous for, being part of the community,
says Allison Lovely the general manager at the Strathmore Boston Pizza.
This is the first year that the store is
actively getting involved in its Future
Prospects.
Future Prospects supports five childrens charities such as Big Brothers
Big Sister, Kids Help Phone, JDRF, Live
Different and the Rick Hansen Foundation. As well as their contribution to
these charities, the Strathmore Boston
Pizza will be giving back to the community in other ways.
The establishment will be having a
round up the bill option for customers with money being donated to the
Strathmore Shelter at the end of the
summer. They also took part in the Five
for Life in March, and in September the
$5 gift cards will also have money going back to childrens charities. Lovely
also hopes to be able to give back to
the schools in the fall, by helping out
whenever necessary.
Strathmore is a wonderful community we have had a lot of support
throughout the community for many
years, Lovely said. So it is time to give
something back.

students will take part in an education
program that teaches kids about wetlands through plant identification, waterfowl biology, and invertebrate dip
netting.
W.G. Turnbull & Associates recently
donated $2,000 to the Strathmore Dinner Committee, with money going towards two days of wetland education.

I think its just great that a local
organization is supporting education
for kids because a lot of members of
the Strathmore Committee are getting
older, so we want to hopefully instill
a conservation ethic in the future generation, said Ashley Rawluck, conservation program specialist with Ducks
Unlimited Canada.
I think its important to get them excited and thinking about it at a young
age, and hopefully theyll continue to
be a supporter of not just Ducks Unlimited but conservation initiatives for
the rest of their lives.
Former Ducks Unlimited employee
and volunteer Jerry Brunen, who contacted W.G. Turnbull & Associates for
their contribution, will take 50 Grade
5 students from Westmount Elementary
on the first excursion in one week. According to Brunen the Western Irrigation District has been heavily involved
over the years in providing kids with
such education.
The program will incorporate a treasure trove of biofacts allowing for the
students to understand how animals
have adapted to their natural environment. An interactive watershed will educate the children on how water flows
across the land and the impact we have
on water. The classroom presentation
will then be followed by a half-day
field trip to the marsh.
Representatives from the Ducks Unlimited Strathmore Dinner Committee
and Western Irrigation District will
educate the two classes from Westmount Elementary on June 12, while
two classes from Brentwood Elementary will take part in the program on
June 15.

We would be happy if it is as successful as last year, said Stanford.

Last year we had $10,000 to give out
because of sponsorship. This year we
have not got that much yet but we are
hoping to do well.
Fourteen non-profit organizations will
have the chance to argue their ideas of
strengthening quality of life and promoting pride within the community, in front
of several judges. While last years highprofile judge W. Brett Wilson wont be
returning to the panel, the event has already confirmed Bill Turnbull, developer
of Edgefield, and Jerry Lemon, an executive with Talisman Energy. Two more
judges are yet to be confirmed. Turnbull,
who was present at last years competition, said hes going to approach the
event with an open mind.
I was at it last year as a spectator and
I know Brett personally and I know Ron
Renaud quite well, and they had fun and
when I was asked to do it this year, I was
more than happy to do it, said Turnbull.
If they get the same attendance rate
they were able to last year and the same
feedback, its a good thing. It opens up
a lot of ideas and gets the community
thinking about stuff.
Last years winner, Hope Bridges,
cashed a $10,000 cheque to get their
project, Quilt the Town, off the ground.

The initiative included painting quilt
designs on pieces of wood and hanging them on the side of building around
Strathmore. The money was used for a
free community workshop to help make
a 4ft by 4ft painted quilt.
We are interested in partnering with
the town and with the county, developing the community and the people in
it, said Wanda Reinholdt from the Hope
Bridges Society. So it was a great opportunity for us to work for the community,
so we made a pitch.
In a surprise twist, the judges also
challenged the community to help raise
money for the Downtown Design Review
Committees proposal of a permanent
multi-purpose Farmers Market building.
With the momentum of last year, the
organizers are still looking for more
sponsors who would be willing to give a
financial contribution towards this years
prize money. Dwight Stanford, the Town
of Strathmores chief administrative officer, said it would be a good advertising
opportunity.
Last years success prompted the owners of the Travelodge to host it this June
11.
Applicants have until noon on June 5
to submit their application.

The Wizard of Oz opened on Rosebud Theatres Opera House May 29
and runs until Sept. 5. Every minute of
this musical play is fun, and its a show
youll want to take your whole family
to see.
The main characters especially Aunt
Em, Uncle Henry, and the farmhands
are endearing right from the beginning.
I feel like theyre the kind of people
wed all love to have living next door,
and maybe, if were lucky enough, they
already do. Cassia Schramm is a cute
young Dorothy, and Laura Gillespie
plays a nasty Miss Gulch.
When Dorothy lands in Oz, she sees
Aunt Em (Marie Russell) as Glinda the
Good Witch, Uncle Henry (Duval Lang)
as the Palace Guard, and Miss Gulch
as the Wicked Witch of the West. The
farmhands become the Scarecrow ( Joel
Stephanson), the Tin Man (David Snider), and the Cowardly Lion (Andrew
Legg). All the key actors deliver great
performances, but for me, these three
steal the show.

Stephanson is a convincingly boneless Scarecrow, especially hilarious
when tiny Schramm rescues him from
falling over. Legg, whose full, unruly
mane is all his own hair, is an adorably terrified Lion, standing on a chair
to sing about being King of the Forest
until he remembers his fear of heights.
Snider is a remarkably stiff and still Tin
Man until his joints get oiled.
This show has constant action, great
music and frequent one-liners that
filled the whole theatre with laughter. The 12-year-old with us loved it as
much as we adults did, though its a
long play and she was fighting to stay
awake near the end. She bought ruby
slippers in the Rosebud Gift Shop, and
the next morning, she persuaded her
grandparents to walk and sing with her
down the Yellow Brick Road.

Hussar: village versus hamlet

Infrastructure demands, provincial operating
funding cuts, and a declining population are
among numerous factors that prompted ratepayers request for a viability review, providing much
needed clarity and determining Hussars competence as a village.
Municipal Affairs performed a screening interview with the village staff earlier this year, after
local officials inquired about the review formerly known as the dissolution study.
Sparked by the concerns of 31 community members during a town hall meeting, the demand is
finally receiving traction with the formation of a
Village of Hussar Review Team.
Its not that we want a dissolution, its that we
want to know that we can remain viable, said
Hussar CAO Jennifer Pratt. Itd be really great to
know where were at for infrastructure. Then we
would know the state of our pipes, our buildings,
our roads and how much it would cost to fix everything. Right from the pipes in the ground to
the roofs of the buildings.
Dependent on government funding, the village
was left in a predicament last year, when cuts to
the Municipal Sustainability Initiative operational
funds drove up property tax rates to accommodate the $138,000 water and sewer bill.
In an government effort to phase out MRI funding, as set out in the 2013 Alberta budget cuts,
Hussar only received $23,000 in funding, a notable drop from previous years that stood firm at
$50,000. Because the funding is based on population, the 176-member community was hurting
more than other municipalities, officials said.
By conducting a viability review, it will be determined whether Hussar will remain a village or
become a hamlet under Wheatland County. According to Pratt, providing services such as bylaw
enforcement proved difficult for the village as the
cost was too much to bear.

With the involvement of Municipal Affairs, representatives from seven organizations will make
up the review team, including the teams recently
appointed Wheatland County CAO Alan Parkin
and Division 7 Wheatland County Councillor Ben
Armstrong.
I know a lot of small municipalities are having
financial issues, and probably the biggest issue,
and we have them in the bigger municipalities
too, is infrastructure, said Armstrong, who had
attended some of their village council and town
hall meetings.
Im not sure what the Municipal Affairs is looking for in that study, as this would be the first one
weve gone through as far as a viability study.
Hussar had previously been the subject of a
dissolution study, but the newly developed viability review remains foreign to the village and
the county. The process will follow the guidelines
set out under the Municipal Sustainability Strategy (MSS), which focuses on building sustainable
communities through municipal partnerships
and collaboration. Approved in June 2012, the
review acts as a major component of the strategy
and includes an analysis of the villages administration, finances, and services. Furthermore the
review will offer assistance by identifying areas
requiring improvement in hopes of achieving viability.
The review team, which is made up of members from Hussar, Wheatland County, the Alberta
Association of Municipal Districts and Counties,
the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, the
Alberta Rural Municipal Administrators Association, the local Government Administration Association, and Municipal Affairs, will have their first
meeting in June.
There are some people that are for becoming
a hamlet, and there are some people for staying a
village, said Pratt. So itll just answer that question once and for all.

The annual Redneck Rumble lacrosse tournament saw
three local teams cap off the weekend with medals.
Tournament coordinator Pamela Seabrook could not be
any happier with the outcome of all the teams performances.
Our teams gave it their all. The coaches there and the kids
are busting from morning until night, said Seabrook.
She was getting compliments from teams in the tournament on how great the event was.
(Teams) said it was the most fun theyve had a tournament this year, said Seabrook. We try to get new teams
here. We pick just because we want new people and everyone gets a chance and we had some hard teams this year.
The behind-the-scenes work was what made the tournament run smoothly.
We had an amazing RIC, which was helpful, all the parents that showed up for our raffle table was super, I mean it
was the biggest one weve had yet, said Seabrook.
The help from the local business community went a long
way with helping cover costs for team apparel.
The sportsmanship displayed by each team was a great
sight to see.
The kids all got along, they enjoyed it immensely running
around, said Seabrook.
There is a tradition every year at this tournament to give
out the Lucas Loftus Award to the midget player who best
exemplifies passion and spirit of the game.
His mom came out and did that. Keenan Brown won that
this year, hes our midget boy and it shows the most heart
and soul, Seabrook.
She predicted that the success of teams at this tournament
would bode well for the future of the event.

For the Strathmore Spartans
high school boys soccer team, the
placing at zones in Cochrane this
past weekend was not ideal.
It seemed that the bounces did
not go their way all weekend.
The Spartans opened up the
tournament against the host Cochrane team and faced an uphill
climb that would last the rest of the
tournament.
We knew they were a highly
ranked team, said head coach Kaitrin McDonnell.
We lost 4-0 but held them to that
fourth goal, didnt let anything else
in and the defense stood strong.
We tried for those goals at every
chance we could.
The second game was against a
familiar foe in Foothills Composite
and was an even keeled game, as
both teams knew each others tendencies.
Both teams showed up and
played really well but they just
took it 3-0, said McDonnell.
By the third game, the Spartans knew their overall finish and
made the game against Canmore a
friendly, fun match.
The ref actually made a comment at the end of the game, I enjoyed reffing that game, thank you
for being my last game of the day
because we had fun, said McDonnell.
She just let any player try any position that the team wanted as the
game wore on.
They didnt quit and we actually talked about that at the end of
the fourth game which was a really
tough loss to Holy Trinity Academy, they still went every shift, said
McDonnell.
She felt that the team showed
perseverance all season long and
each players skill set continued to
grow with each game.

Banff; boys reflect on positives

The
Strathmore
High
School girls rugby team did
not get the result they were
looking for at zones on May
28 in Calgary.
Head coach Jerry Flaws
knew that Banff was a good
test and that better positioning would have been key if
they were to have won.

We just needed to work
on tackling, just the basics
of the game, said Flaws.
We let too many people
through, we needed to get
a shoulder in on our tackles
not just a hands.
However, Flaws did admit
that there was some noticeable progress in some positions from the Smith Falls

trip that carried over into zones.

Our defensive positioning got way
better as the year went on. The kids
were in the right spots and if we were
to tackle better, we wouldve been better off, but at least they were in the
right position.
Although there are some graduating
players from this years roster, the future looks bright for the Lady Spartans.
If the core group comes back and
continues to work as a tightly knit
group, then there will be success.
We have some huge shoes to fill
with our Grade 12s leaving but I think
with a few of them leaving this year, it
should be easier to bounce back next
year than it was this year, said Flaws.
Meanwhile, the boys Spartans rugby
team played an exhibition game on the
same day and were defeated by Holy
Trinity Academy.
Head coach Brad Steele was enthused about his teams play but knows
that the knowledge of the game can be
improved upon.
The exhibition game at zones was
a good game, our guys played hard,
said Steele.
We scored at least one try but could
not put enough phases of rugby together to score some more. A lot of
good individual effort, some good
tackles were made, (and)some good
runs were made.
Over the course of the season, Steele
felt that a lot of the players picked
up on some coaching techniques that
made them better players.
Individual players picked up on
things that weve been coaching, running and tackling, so individual skills
improved, once again it was a matter of
putting it all together error free.
His hope was that the players would
be gaining some experience from the
rugby festival to move up in the levels
of the sport.
He added that it will be nice to get
a fresh start at coaching a new group
of players.

The Wheatland Kings officially
capped off their 2014-2015 season with
their year-end awards banquet on May
30.
The organization awarded Brayden
Beckley with the MVP, Read Douglaswas named the Best Defensive Player,
Ryan Grasdahl the Most Improved Player, Kirby Ruzesky with the Strathmore
Times Player of the Year and Chris Williams with the hardest working player
award.
Head coach Jeremy Blumes was extremely proud of each player for what
they did on the ice for the Kings this
season.
He could not say enough good things
about his rookie rearguard, Read Douglas, and how responsible he was on the
blue line.
As a rookie, he was one of our most
reliable penalty killers, hes certainly if
he didnt lead our team in block shots,
he was among our leaders, said the
coach.
Blumes gave credit to Douglas for
laying his body on the line and being a
team first player all season long.
As for local product Ryan Grasdahl,
Blumes felt that he came a long way
considering he did not play a high cali-
bre hockey before joining the Kings.

For a guy that played midget 1, and
step in and play in one of the best junior B leagues in Western Canada and
become a reliable physical shut down
guy, that plays with an edge but played
with lots of discipline, we couldnt be
more pleased with his development,
said Blumes.
Forward Chris Williams was seen on
most nights giving it an honest effort.
He played the game at a very high
pace, and he forced the opposition into
all kinds of mistakes with his tenacity,
said Blumes.
He admits the team was pretty fortunate to have true leader in captain
Kirby Ruzesky around for one season.
Ive coached many players but not
like Kirby who have the ability to put
the puck in the back of the net. He is
by the very definition a natural goal
scorer, said Blumes.
We were happy the (Strathmore)
Times recognized him after all those
three star selections.
Brayden Beckley was a prime example of being a player who could play in
all situations and be effective.
He was a big part of both special
teams, our top PK unit and our power
play units, said Blumes. He played
with a lot of tenacity, (and) led our
team in scoring.

Austins journey on and off the track

The Race for Autism team made a

stop at the Strathmore Motorsports
Park last weekend and for 16-year-old
Uxbridge, Ont. native Austin Riley, this
is a way of life that makes him feel content and accepted.
Racing makes me feel free, he said.
If I can follow my dreams, so can anyone.
His father, Jason, remembers the day
he got involved in the kart racing and
how he never looked back but admits
it was not easy at first.
One day we received a flyer in the
mail for an arrive and drive go-kart
program from Goodwood Kartways,
which was 20 minutes from our house,
said Jason. It took several weeks of
convincing but Austin finally decided
to try it. Then at age seven, my son sat
in a go-kart, and for the very first time
in his life I saw he was truly happy.
He will never forget the endless enjoyment Austin got in kart racing as he
finally found something he enjoyed.
When he drove onto the track I remember hoping that this would work
and we would find something he enjoyed, said Jason. It didnt matter to
me if he was good at it, I just wanted
to be able to give the kid something
he hadnt had in his short life acceptance.
Austin refused to let his condition
take over him fitting into the circuit.
Just because you have Autism, it
doesnt mean you cant do great things,
said Austin.
On that day, Austin would finish
eighth in the race, but did not look
back as he only got better each race he
participated in.
That was the only time he missed the
podium as he would make progression
towards beating drivers that were older
than him and making it to the higher
ranks of kart racing.
He is now racing at the highest level
in North America and driving karts capable of over 100mph against men that
are much older than he is still, said Jason. He has won three Karting Championships in his short racing career.
Austin saw his performance on the
track pay off with an impressive accomplishment and garnered the talk
of the kart-racing world. Last August
Austin realized his life-long dream and
became the first person in the world
with Autism to attend and graduate the
prestigious Skip Barber racing school
at Road Atlanta in Georgia.
However, it was prior to that where
Austin garnered attention in the kart
world when he competed at the Western Championships in Regina last year
with times recorded at the top half of
the race sheets.
On Sunday, the Strathmore Motorsports Park opened its doors to its 100
members racing in the establishments
first race. The Calgary Kart Racing Club
had approached town council last year
in regards to relocating the multi-use
motorsports park to Strathmore from
Calgary. With too much red tape in the
city, the organization was able to work
with town administration and ultimately resulted of its construction near Eagle Lake.
We are the only facility in southern
Alberta, so we do draw from a number
of different places, said John Kwong,
president of the Calgary Kart Racing
Club. Its the kind of sport that makes
people want to come from far and

wide. Austin Riley, who [raced[ with
us this weekend, hes travelled across
Canada raising awareness for Autism.
According to Jason, Austin was
claimed to be the best youth Autism
racer from Ontario, and was amazed
at the curiosity his story garnered from
complete strangers.
When the smoke cleared, Austin
has finished an amazing third place
and gained the biggest cheer from the
crowd during the podium presentation, he said.
In the 10 months that Jess Benje
has been Austins educational assistant, she felt a special bond, not only
in the classroom but because she races
as well, that makes them comfortable
around each another.
When I first started with him in the
classroom, Austin, he wouldnt speak
up if there were new people in the
room, Benje said. He would go really shy and he would do all his talking
through me.
As time has gone on, our relationship has gotten close. We kind of lost
the teacher student thing,and Im more
of a big sister now. To say Austin progressed before the tour he started
to go into gym class and go into shop
class and actually participate.

Benje stated that Austin has been an

inspiration to all and that disabilities
should not limit what one can do in
life.
He helped many kids around his age
to get on the track and encouraged
them to give the sport a try.
Austin has inspired at least 20 kids
in Ontario to race and all over world
theres a lot of connections that he has,
she added. Lots of kids with Autism
have started racing because of him.
According to Benji, the main focus
off track is playing racing games on his
Xbox and going to Tim Hortons where
Austin just recently began to order his
own meals.

The Strathmore Spartans high school
football players are optimistic they will
be a team ready to compete in what
will be a very tough high school conference.
First-year bench boss, Travis Gorski,
knows that a positive attitude will go a
long way in the teams success.
Football, its a tough game, it demands discipline and builds character,
said Gorski. It pushes the athletes farther than they ever thought they could
go. That educational aspect of the game
is why football is so valuable to kids at
the high school level.
During the spring camp in early May,
the program saw 31 players register
for the program and are hopeful to see
more players come out when the season opens in the fall. Gorski said the
players will have to work together on
the field if they want to see results. His
hope is that players view football as
more than just a game.
Being a part of the school has a lot
of benefits. Being able to take it more
as a learning process and understanding its much more than a game, but
just the life learning experience part of
the team, said Gorski.
Football is one of those real unique
sports where you cant just have one
or two superstar athletes, you have to
have a full team working together. Its
one of those sports that you have to put
so much effort and time in and really
nothing is promised in return.
As coaches bring different perspectives and players build a certain culture, Gorski believes the mindsets will
gel together nicely.
We dont have two of the same
coachs, he said. Each of us bring our
own unique personality to the coaching staff and I think the kids can really
connect with that. We have all of our
roles within the team and I think we
mesh together.
Returning to the defensive end, Marvin Agboro is already excited for next
season. Im actually very excited, Agboro said. I think our team is going
to be a lot better than it was last year.
There are a lot of people from last year
and there are a few Grade 10s coming
in that should make a big impact on the
defensive line.
He emphasized to his future teammates that dedication to working at
the position would be beneficial as an
overall player.
Left offensive tackle, Bailey Hawes, is
expecting the teams game to improve
from last season.
I know for a fact this year Im going
to step up, but a lot of the other kids
are stepping up because we want to do
better this year than we did last year,
said Hawes. I plan on getting defensive captain this year and besides that
I want to make a name for myself this
year. Of course, I have to go to postsecondary after this and get noticed at
least, thats my goal.

SAY A PRAYER
The other night I was out in the
community, and the sirens began
to scream in the darkness of the
night. And at first, when I heard
them, as I often do, I flinched. Because if those services are being
called out, it means something
has happened, someone needs
help, and something potentially
dangerous or tragic is unfolding.
But then I remembered something
someone told me, long ago, when
they had needed the services of
the local ambulances.
When I hear sirens, I know
help is on the way, and that any
chance for a positive or better
outcome, will come through
them.
That changed my perceptions a
lot. Now, when I hear the sirens,
I stop and pray a little prayer of
thanks. For the officers, RCMP,
County and Strathmore Constabulary who are out there striving
to keep peace and order in our
community, giving us security
and safety. I pray for the EMT
and Paramedics who respond
to medical situations with such
professional and capable abilities
to care for someone in need, and
to support the families or friends
standing anxiously along side. I
pray for the firefighters in those
big red vehicles maneuvering

are volunteers But mostly I
know that every time they go to
work every time they put on
their uniforms, their protective
gear, they hop in their vehicles
and flick on those flashing lights
and sirens, or even stop because
they see something that just
doesnt seem right happening,
they are doing it out of care for us
and our community.
And for that, I encourage each of
us to say thanks, to show them
respect for the incredibly difficult
job they so often have, and to say
a prayer for them, their families,
and their safety and well being. I
hate to think of how things would
be without them and the courage,
compassion and support they
bring to our community ahem.

It is with great sadness that the family of Dale Beaton announces his passing on May
31, 2015. Dale is survived by his parents, Linda and
Barry Beaton; his brother Duane (Camilla); sister
Jennifer (Ernie); two nieces Makenzie and Jordan
Beaton; two nephews Connor and Hunter Corbin;
as well as many relatives and close friends. He was
predeceased by his grandparents. Dale loved life,
was easygoing and had a great sense of humour,
always loving to razz his Dad. He was also a good
listener, was always willing to help out, and always
made time for his nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed golfing with Scott and Russel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to an ATB trust
account in Dales name. A memorial service will be
held on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Strathmore Alliance Church at 1:00 p.m. To send condolences,
