NUMBERS
Key points:
❖ Any factor of a number that is a prime number is a prime factor. For example, 2 and 3 are
the prime factors of 12.
❖ You can write any number as a product of its prime factors.
❖ The Highest Common Factor (HCF) of two whole numbers is the highest factor that is
common to them both. For example, 3, 5 and 15 are all common factors of 30 and 45 but
their highest common factor is 15.
❖ The Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) of two whole numbers is the lowest number that is a
multiple of both. For example, the common multiples of 10 and 15 are 30,60,90,120, but
30 is their lowest common multiple.
Example 1
Method 1
180 = 3 × 60
=3×3×20
=3×3×2×10
=3×3×2×2×5
180= 32 ×22×5
Prime factors of 180 are 2, 3 and 5

Method 2

180= 2×2×3×3×5

Example 2
Find the HCF and LCM of 8 and 12
❖ The factors of 6 are 1,2,4,8
2 is the highest number that
❖ Factors of 12 are 1,2,3,4,6,12
appear in both lists
❖ The HCF of 8 and 12 is 2

Lowest Common Multiple

Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40….
Multiples of 12: 12, 24, 36, 48… 24 is the lowest number
common to both lists

LCM of 8 and 12 is 24

Example 3
Method 1
Identify the common
Find the HCF and LCM of 140 and 210 factors; numbers that
140 = 2×2×5×7 appear in both lists

210 = 2×3×5×7
HCF of 140 and 210 = 2×5×7
Multiply the common
= 70 factors together to get the
HCF

Multiply the HCF by the numbers

in both lists that were not
highlighted to get the LCM
LCM of 140 and 210= 70×2×3

UNDERSTANDING SQUARES AND CUBES

KEY POINTS
• A square number is the result of multiplying a whole number by itself.
1×1=1
2×2=4
3×3=9
Square numbers = 1,4,9,16,25,36….

• A cube number results from multiplying a whole number by itself then multiplying by
that number again.
1×1×1= 1
2×2×2= 8
3×3×3= 27
4×4×4= 64
Cube numbers= 1, 8, 27, 64, 125……

• 7 ×7= 49, so we can say 7 is the square root of 49

• 3×3×3= 27, so we can say 3 is the cube root of 27

Exercise
• Write down the first 15 square numbers

ORDER OF OPERATIONS

Brackets- if there are any brackets in the problem, work out the value of the expression inside
the brackets first
Indices- Indices include square roots, cube roots and powers
Division – if there are no brackets, do dividing and multiplying before adding and subtracting,
no matter where they come in the expression.
Multiplication –
Addition
Subtraction -if an expression has only adding and subtracting then work it out from left to right.

Example
23 ×102 – 7 ×4 = 23×100 – 7 ×4
= 2300 – 28 Work out 102 first then do all the
multiplying before subtraction
= 2272

Example
(13 – 3 × 2)3= (13 – 6 )3
=73
= 343

RECIPROCALS

PATTERNS AND SEQUENCES

SEQUENCES

A sequence is a set of numbers which follow a particular rule. The

word ‘ term’ is often used to describe the numbers in a sequence.
For the sequence
3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23
The first term is 3 and the second term is 7 etc.

49
74549960/74339844 KEFENTSE MOGOPODI

The expression ‘ the nth term’ is often used to denote the value of any
term in the sequence.
For the above sequence the nth term is 4n – 1 so that:
the first term ( where n=1 ) is 4 ×1 – 1 = 3
the second term( where n=2) is 4 ×2 – 1= 7
the term (where n =3 ) is 4×3 – 1 = 11

similarly, the 50th term (where n=50 ) is 4×50 – 1 = 199

and the 1000th term (where n = 1000) is 4 ×1000 – 1 = 3999

Linear sequences
For the sequence
3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23
Work out the difference as shown

3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23

+4 +4 +4 +4 +4
As the first differences are all the same then the sequence is linear,
so you can use the formula:
The nth term = first term + (n – 1 ) ×1st difference
For this sequence
The nth term = 3 + (n – 1) ×4

50
74549960/74339844 KEFENTSE MOGOPODI

= 3 + 4n – 4

FINDING THE NTH TERM USING A DIFFERENCE TABLE

SEQUENCE
If we assume tn = an +b where a and b are numbers, then we can form a
difference table sequence.
a+b, 2a+b, 3a+b, 4a+b,

a a a
then in tn= an +b , a=8
tn = 8n + b
using the first term t1= 5, we have 5 = 8 ×1 +b
5= 8+b
b= 5 – 8
b= – 3
hence tn = 8n – 3 for the given sequence

Check the answer: t2 = 8×2 – 3 = 16 – 3 = 13

t3= 8 ×3 – 3 = 24 – 3 = 21

*tn takes the form of an2 +bn + c when we have to go into the second
difference. tn = an2 +bn +c, giving b=1, 2, 3 …. We get

54
74549960/74339844 KEFENTSE MOGOPODI

a+b+c 4a+2b+c 9a+3b+c 16a+4b+c

3a +b 5a+b 7a+b

Examples
*Find tn for the sequence 6, 7, 10, 15
Solution
6, 7, 10, 15,

1 3 5

2 2
2a = 2 so a = 1 in tn = an2 +bn + c
When n= 1 , t1 = 1 ×12 + b×1 +c = 6
1+b+c=6
b+c = 5 (1)
when n = 2 , t2 = 1×22+b×2+c =7
4 +2b+c= 7
2b+c = 3 (2)

Solving (1) and (2) for b and c

b+ c = 5
2b + c = 3

55
74549960/74339844 KEFENTSE MOGOPODI

– b= 2 or b= – 2
b+ c = 5

*Find tn for the sequence 3, 9, 19, 33, 51

3, 9, 19, 33, 51

6 10 14 18

4 4 4
Here 2a = 4 so a =2 in tn = an2 +bn +c
i.e tn= 2n2 +bn +c

to find b and c :
when n = 1, t1= 2×12 +b×1+c= 2 +b+c= 3
b+c = 1

56
74549960/74339844 KEFENTSE MOGOPODI

when n= 2, t2 = 2 ×22 +b×2 +c = 8 +2b+ c= 9

b+ c = 1 solve simultaneously
2b+c = 1
– b= 0 or b=0
and b + c= 1
0+c= 1
c= 1
tn= 2n2 + 0 ×n +1
tn = 2n2 + 1

check your answers : t3 = 2×32 + 1 = 19

t4 = 2×42 +1= 33

ANOTHER WAY OF DEALING WITH QUADRATIC

SEQUENCES

– 1, 2, 7, 14, 23, 34…
Work out the difference as shown

57
74549960/74339844 KEFENTSE MOGOPODI

As the first differences are not the same, work out the second
differences (or the differences of the differences).
As the second differences are all the same, the sequence is quadratic
so use the formula:

The nth term = first term+ ( n – 1 ) ×1st difference + (n – 1)(n –

RATIO AND PROPORTIONS

*Ratios are used to compare quantities
*The simplest form of a ratio has whole numbers with no common
factor

Example 1
*Tshepho is 52 years old and her son is 26 years old. We say the
ratio of Tshepho’s age to her son’s age is 52 : 26 = 2 : 1 and the ratio
of her son’s age to hers is 26 : 52 = 1 : 2
Example 2
Maipelo is three times older than Thero and Thero is half of
Tshepho’s age. If Tshepho is 30 years old, write their age in the ratio
Maipelo : Thero : Tshepho in its simplest form.

Thero is half of 30 years old, which is 15 years and Maipelo is 3

times older than Thero, so she is 45 years old
45 : 15 : 30
3:1:2
Example 3
A book costs P450. How much will you need to buy 10 of those
books ?
P450 × 10 = P4500

71
74549960/74339844 KEFENTSE MOGOPODI

The cost of books increases as the number of books increase. This is

refereed to as direct proportion. If we were to decrease the number
of books to 5, the cost would also decrease to P2250.

A building company has enough food for its 400 workers for 20 days. If
the company increased its workers to 800, how long would the food last?

400 : 20
800 : x

800 800

Since the number of workers increased, the consumption of food also

increased leading to the food getting depleted quickly

This is an example of inverse proportion.
