Carl Howerton earned three letters in both basketball and football from 1940 to 1943. A native of Olive Hill, Ky., Howerton was a speedy halfback on the Eagle football team and was noted for his long runs. The MSU school yearbook reports a 90-yard run for a touchdown against Salem.
As a basketball standout, he was known as an excellent ball handler and defender. Howerton had an outstanding long-range set shot and was one of MSU’s top players under pressure.
He earned a bachelor’s degree from MSU in 1943 and went on to establish a successful dental practice.
